Subwoofer System upgrade for 2014 Peterbilt Semi

August 19, 2019 By Staff 2 Comments

Peterbilt SubwooferThe San Jose-based owner of this 2014 Peterbilt dropped into California Car Sounds and Tint to inquire about upgrading the factory-installed touchscreen audio system with a subwoofer. The client spends most of his life in the truck and wanted much better sound from the stereo. After inspecting the vehicle and talking to the client about how he listens to his music, we put together a simple upgrade that would deliver the audio performance he wanted.

JL Audio Subwoofer for Peterbilt Semi

We were able to integrate the subwoofer system with the factory touch screen.

The two JL audio subwoofers offer the client lots of bass in a small package.

Our fabrication team created a space-saving enclosure for this Peterbilt.

Our plan for the truck was to add a pair of 10-inch subwoofers and a dedicated amplifier to the factory stereo system. After taking a series of measurements, our fabrication team constructed a compact enclosure for a pair of JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofers. The enclosure is a sealed design and is constructed from ¾-inch MDF to ensure it would be a solid foundation for the speakers. We wrapped the enclosure in a durable gray trunk liner carpet and bolted it to the cab of the truck. Once the subwoofers were mounted in the enclosure, we added a pair of SGR-10TW3 grilles to protect the speaker cones from damage.

SounDigital Power Amplifier Installation

The compact amplifier offers plenty of clean power.

Next on the list was the installation of an amplifier to power the subwoofers. The client chose a SounDigital 2000.1 EVO amp. This compact amplifier can produce up to 2,000 watts of power into the pair of subwoofers – well more than the client will ever need. We used a JL Audio L0C-22 high-to-low adapter to convert the speaker-level audio signal into one that can be connected to the amplifier. The LoC-22 also creates a remote turn-on signal that we used to turn on the new subwoofer amplifier. The signal is generated automatically once the factory radio turns on.

Our fabrication team mounted the amplifier to a piece of HDPE plastic attached to the seat frame under on the passenger side of the truck. The amp is wired to the truck battery with 4-AWG OFC Stinger Pro Series power and ground cables to ensure efficient and reliable power delivery.

San Jose’s Car Audio Experts

With the system installed and the LoC-22 and subwoofer amplifier configured to work with the factory touchscreen radio, we let the client know that his Peterbilt semi was once again ready to roll. He hopped in for a listen and was stunned at how much bass the pair of shallow-mount JL Audio subwoofers were able to produce. If your car, truck, SUV or big rig could benefit from a subwoofer upgrade, drop by California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell and speak with a member of our team.
