Los Gatos Client Gets Classic Ford Mustang Audio System

July 12, 2017 By Staff 2 Comments

Ford Mustang AudioA client from Los Gatos came to California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell for a 1966 Ford Mustang audio system upgrade. Being a member of a band, the owner had some above-average expectations when it comes to music. The stereo in the car buzzed and rattled, and simply wasn’t impressive. We talked to the owner about his goals, then designed a system that would sound amazing and not require any additional modification to his classic car.

Morel Virtus Nano Kick Panels and Rear Speakers

Our professional series templates allow for precision layout and fabrication.

Our technicians use templates and a router to fabricate the custom shape for the panels.

Exact copies for each side were all made together to ensure accuracy.

The accent lines gave the panels enough dimension to catch your eye.

The low profile speakers and angled tweeter mounts helped reduce the thickness of these panels.

All of the factory controls were fully accessible on the driver’s side.

The panels looked right at home in this classic Mustang.

We started by removing a set of plastic kick panels that didn’t sound very good.  Our team began fabrication of a new set to house a Morel Virus Nano 602 6.5-inch component set. The woofer in the 602 set is only 0.66 inches deep and sounds excellent. Our team created the new panels from .25-inch MDF panels using our router table, then bonded them together and wrapped them in gray vinyl. We mounted the 1.1-inch tweeters from the set above the woofers, using the angle brackets provided in the kit. A set of Focal Auditor RCX690 6×9-inch speakers on the rear deck helps to wrap the sound around the listening environment.

Compact Subwoofer Solution

A JL Audio CP106LG-W3v3 subwoofer lives in the trunk of the car. That compact enclosure measures a mere 14.25 by 9.75×5.25 inches and houses a single JL Audio 6W3v3 6.5-inch subwoofer. The bass reflex design of the enclosure allows it to provide powerful low-frequency output from this incredibly small package.

Ford Mustang Source Unit Installation

The dash of the classic Mustang had already been modified for a DIN-sized head unit. We installed an Alpine CDE-HD149BT in the dash to provide USB connectivity, Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming. The outputs of the Alpine head unit feed a JL Audio XD700/5v2 five-channel amplifier. The front channels are capable of producing up to 75 watts, and the subwoofer channel will provide up to 300 watts to enhance the bass response of the system.

System Tuning and Delivery

After two days of work, it was time to tune the system. We always use our RTA microphone and TrueRTA audio analysis software to ensure the systems we install will provide smooth frequency response.

Once we completed the final tuning and configuration, it was time for the customer to enjoy his new sound system. He was thrilled with the upgrade!

If you are tired of old-school sound in your classic car, drop by California Car Sounds and Tint and lets us design and install something amazing for you. You can reach us using our online contact FORM for more information.
