A client from San Jose contacted California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell to ask about a 2006 Sanger ski boat audio system upgrade. The client had recently pulled the boat out of storage and decided that the decade-old audio system just wasn’t cutting it anymore. We showed him some of the latest marine audio products from JL Audio and let him have a listen to them. He was stunned at how much better they sounded and immediately gave us the green light to go to work.
JL Audio Digital Media Receiver
We removed the old radio and remote, and promptly stored them in the circular file. Our team created an adapter plate to let us mount a JL Audio MM100S digital media receiver where the old over-sized radio used to be. The MediaMaster 100S includes Bluetooth for audio streaming and a rear USB jack to play digital media files.
Conveniently, the JL Audio MMR-20-BE remote control fits into the remote control cutout from the original radio. This remote gives the client full control over audio source selection and volume control, and includes a compact display that lets him know what source is selected.
System Amplifiers
With a plan to install a total of 10 speakers in the boat, we were going to need a lot of amplifier channels and power. We mounted a JL Audio M700/5 and M800/8 on a carpeted panel in the storage locker on the passenger side of the boat. We re-used the existing wiring from the original system to help manage the overall cost of the system.
Speaker Upgrades
We installed six JL Audio M650-CCX-SG-TB 6.5-inch coaxial speakers in the boat and powered them and a matching subwoofer with the M700/5 amplifier. To ensure whoever was at the end of the tow rope would be able to enjoy their music, we added two sets of the awesome 8.8-inch M800-ETXv2-SG-TK tower speakers to the wakeboard bar. The eight-channel JL amp is bridged to provide each speaker with an impressive 200 watts of power.
Sanger Ski Boat Audio System Setup and Delivery
With the crossovers and sensitivity controls on the amp set, it was time to turn this Sanger ski boat audio system project back over to the client. To say that he was shocked by the improvement in overall sound quality and volume capability would be a gross understatement. He couldn’t wait to get the boat into the water on the weekend!
