Factory Head Unit and Amplifier Integration
If we connect the speaker outputs of your factory amplifier to a new amp, we may have to deal with factory equalization and signal delays that will make new speakers sound horrible. JL Audio realized that there had to be a way to undo the factory tuning so new speakers, amplifiers and signal processors would sound amazing. The fruits of their investment are the FiX-82 and FiX-86 processors.
Features and Processing Capabilities
Both the FiX-82 and the FiX-86 have eight speaker-level inputs capable of accepting 30 V of signal. The FiX-82 has a pair of 4 V preamp outputs and an optical SP/DIF output. The FiX-86 has three pairs of outputs, labeled as Front, Rear and Subwoofer. The FiX-82 is intended for use with vehicles that include a two-way front stage, rear speakers and a sub.
Once we have all the wiring connected, we play a configuration track on the source unit and begin the calibration process. The FiX processor analyzes the signal on each input and applies a correction to undo equalization and signal delay. The result is a time-coherent, full-range output signal that we can connect to a new processor or amplifiers.
Additional Signal Processing and Control Features
JL was kind enough to include some basic tuning functions in the FiX processors for systems that don’t require the power of their TwK processors. High-pass crossovers on the front and rear channels with a low-pass crossover on the sub channels provide reliable filtering. Each of the front and rear outputs has a 10-band graphic equalizer, so we can massage the frequency response of each speaker location.
JL includes offers a remote control called the DRC-100 that can serve as a master volume control and bypass signal delay correction so Bluetooth calling noise cancellation works better. Finally, the FiX processors include remote turn-on detection, so they will turn on your amps as soon as the radio is on.
