Ford Shelby Mustang Radar and Laser System for Campbell Client

April 11, 2018 By Staff Leave a Comment

Ford Shelby Mustang RadarA client from here in Campbell recently visited California Car Sounds and Tint to discuss a 2016 Ford Shelby Mustang radar and laser detector system. The 500-plus horsepower pony car can reach incredibly illegal speeds in the blink of an eye. The client wanted a radar detector system that would keep his driver’s license safe and insurance rates at bay. After inspecting the car and talking to the owner about where he drives the vehicle, we came up with a plan to install an AL Priority system for him.

Premium Radar Detection System

Based in Croatia, AL Priority may not be a household name, unless you’ve researched laser defense and radar detector systems. Marketed as a premium parking sensor system to get around laws in certain countries, AL Priority laser detector systems are among the best available at any price. For this installation, we put together a system that includes four laser transceivers, the optional Net Radar package, a GPS receiver, the Bluetooth interface and the HiFi speaker option.

Laser Transceiver Installation

The project started with removing the front fascia of the angry Mustang. Our team mounted a pair of laser sensors in the main grille opening and secured them in place using the provided steel brackets. We added an optional TX sensor to the center of the grill to increase the system coverage. The TX sensor is considered one of the best defense solutions against laser guns like the DragonEye that are difficult to override. While standard sensors include four receiver LEDs and one transmitter, the TX head has three transmitters, one of which is oriented vertically to improve performance on overpasses. To ensure maximum sensitivity, the client permitted us to cut the sensors into the hexagonal grille.

We added a second pair of standard laser sensors to the rear of the vehicle. The sensors are mounted above the license plate and are separated to provide good coverage.

AL Priority Control Set Installation

The MDF template was used to create a reverse of it, for the perfect template to cut the opening for mounting.

The controller was mounted within easy reach of the client.

The AL Priority system includes a thin control panel that is used to cancel the laser defense system and configure the system. We removed a trim piece from the area beside the cigarette lighter socket at the bottom of the center console and cut an opening for the controller using our router table and a flush trim router bit. The controller looks right at home at the bottom of the dash.

Net Radar and GPS Features

Radar detection is an option on the AL Priority system. We mounted the radar receiver behind the front fascia of the Mustang. The Net Radar system detects X, K and Ka-band radar guns with impressive sensitivity.

The GPS antenna option allows the client to mark the location of known false alarms and is used to activate the laser defense features once the vehicle is in motion.

Smartphone Integration Features

The Bluetooth interface allows the client to use an Apple iPhone or Android-based smartphone with his Ford Shelby Mustang radar detector system. The free ALP Connect app provides real-time information about the kind of speed detection device that has been detected and identifies the direction it came from. The client can look at a log of alerts the system has received. If the phone isn’t connected, the system defaults alerts back to the HiFi control set and its high-output speaker.

As with all of our installations, our team took the time to route the wiring carefully through the vehicle and secure it in place using automotive-grade cloth harness tapes and premium wire ties. Once the system installation was complete, we set up a base configuration that would provide good protection against the radar and laser guns used here in California.

It took us a few days to complete the installation on this Shelby Mustang, but the time and effort were well worth it. The system looks great and will provide excellent protection. The client was very pleased with the installation and appreciative that we took the time to go through the functionality of the system with him.
